In the heart of Los Angeles, Levitt LA makes live music accessible to all, creating a stronger community and deepening connections. Every season, 50 free concerts are presented over 13-weeks in the summer—and we couldn’t do it without the dedication of our fabulous Levitt LA volunteers! The 2018 summer season attracted over 50 volunteers, who channeled their love of music and community to enhance the guest experience on the Levitt LA lawn. We’re extremely thankful for the hundreds of hours of hard work and thousands of smiles brought forth by Levitt LA’s volunteer team.

Today we shine the spotlight on Enma Barrios, one of our rock star volunteers from this past summer! Connected to us through Para Los Niños’ Youth Workforce Services [HireLA’s youth program], Enma’s experience as a volunteer for Levitt LA also brought her paid, hands-on work experience as she helped steward the impact of the arts on all music lovers, no matter the age. Read her interview below to learn about her Levitt LA experience, including her favorite memory from last season’s summer under the stars!

Barrios is a Business major attending UC Riverside, planning a career in Human Resources. During her spare time, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and learning to play the piano and guitar.

Levitt LA: What attracted you to volunteer for Levitt LA?

Enma: The setting in which Levitt LA holds its live music concerts attracted me to volunteer. I have never worked at an outdoor setting, especially in a park, so I was intrigued by that aspect of the program.

Levitt LA: How does volunteering with Levitt LA align with your values?

Enma: Volunteering at Levitt LA aligns with my value of community building. Many people gather to enjoy music performances! [We] work to spread the word and inform people about any future performances.

Levitt LA: Are there any nights, concerts or moments that stand out to you the most? If so, can you elaborate?

Enma: The day that I was exposed to Ska music and the people dancing to it stands out to me the most. I do not recall ever seeing how people dance to Ska music, so it was interesting to see! Everybody was dancing freely and at a quick pace. That night stands out the most because I could see people’s reaction that they were greatly enjoying the music and dancing.

Levitt LA: How does Levitt LA impact the MacArthur Park community?

Enma: Levitt LA brings a positive experience to people who are unable to afford live music, and for that I am very grateful.
